Ancient Egyptian green eye paint, known as Wa’adj, was made from malachite, a vibrant green copper carbonate mineral. It was applied around the eyes not only for beauty but also for spiritual and medicinal purposes. Egyptians believed it offered protection from evil and invoked the goddess Hathor’s favor. The malachite was ground into a fine powder and mixed with a binding agent like gum or water to create a paste. This striking green pigment was especially popular during the Old Kingdom, often extending from the eyelids to the temples in bold, dramatic lines.
Satjya Natjaru has formulated a traditional eye paint blend from cosmetic grade malachite green mica mineral with zinc oxide to protect from the damaging rays of the sun.
Our 1 oz wa’adj comes with a traditional application stick.
